Five fathers appeared in court today accused of “blocking” all the main routes into London. The men, from the Fathers4Justice pressure group, allegedly donned superhero outfits to unfurl banners across busy roads.
The day-long protests on February 2 this year targeted the Blackwall Tunnel, the A13 Canning Town flyover, the eastbound carriageway of the M4 and the A40 at Shepherds Bush, London’s Southwark Crown Court heard.
In the dock for the 15-minute preliminary hearing were Jonathan Stanesby, 38, of Manor Close, Ivy Bridge, Devon; Graham Manson, 39, of River Barge Close, Isle of Dogs, East London; Paul Robinson, 44, of Eastern Avenue, Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire; Darryl Westell, 22, of St James’ Street, Nottingham, and Mattaus Huber, 51, of Ballards Road, Dagenham, Essex – the only one not to sport the group’s trademark purple T-shirt.The single conspiracy charge they face claims they caused “banners to be on or over a road in such circumstances that it would have been obvious to a reasonable person that to do so would be dangerous”.
Roger Daniells-Smith, prosecuting, alleged: “All the arterial roads leading into London that day were blocked by the activities of this group acting together in concert from early in the morning.”
Adjourning the case to a plea and directions hearing on December 14, Judge Geoffrey Rivlin, QC, told the defendants they could remain on unconditional bail.
As the court rose one of the men’s supporters shouted from the public gallery: “Fathers4Justice, Your Honour.”
Earlier, outside court, a lone demonstrator armed with a megaphone and heavily outnumbered by police paraded up and down calling for separated fathers to be given greater access to their children.
