From the London Evening Standard Protesting fathers block roads
Fathers 4 Justice have staged protests on a number of raods throughout Britain. It's getting radio and some TV coverage. More on that later....
PRESS RELEASE.I've also received this
In the early hours of 2nd February 2004 four members of the pressure group
FATHERS-4-JUSTICE have taken over the Clifton Suspension Bridge, by climbing
onto the support at the Ashton end, dressed as the super heros, BATMAN,
ROBIN, SUPERMAN and SPIDERMAN, they have unveiled a banner reading:-
SUPERHERO FATHERS 4 JUSTICE
FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHT TO SEE YOUR KIDS www. fathers-4-justice.org
They apologise for any inconvenience to commuters that are denied access to
the bridge, but they and thousands of other fathers in this country are
denied access to there children every day by this countries archaic family
laws, which they say should be abolished. It is not known yet how long this
demo will last but last week another fathers-4-justice member did a similar
protest on Plymouths Tamar bridge that lasted 1 week. It is thought that as
many as 15 members of fathers 4 justice met in bristol this morning and
aided this action, these members are from all over the west country, coming
from Cheltenham, Swindon, Lyme Regis, Worcester, Gloucester and Bristol.
As many as 50 members of fathers-4-justice plan to visit the site throughout
the day to support there superheros.
The following is a list of actions that have been taken this morning (MondayFrom Local London News. Protesting men target motorway traffic
2nd February 2004):1. Telford Bridge, Bristol has been closed by Batman, Robin, Superman &
Spiderman.2. Tyne Bridge, Newcastle is suffering major congestion as a result of
action by Batman, Robin, Superman & Spiderman.3. A13 in London, we are unsure but think that it is probably been closed
by Batman4. A40 in London, Superman has caused the closure of two lanes.
5. A2 Kent, 2 people taking action, we are awaiting further details
6. M4 London, again action being taken, we are awaiting reports
We now understand that Blackwall Tunnel has also been closed as a result of
"Superhero" action.
Protesters have scaled gantries above five major roads across London, Scotland Yard has reported. Four men climbed to perches above roads including the M4, between 7.30 and 8.45 this morning, a Met Police spokesperson said. From the London Evening Standard Protesting fathers block roadsIt is believed the men may be acting in support of campaign group "fathers 4 justice", which claims the British legal system is often biased in awarding exclusive custody of children to mothers.
Previous actions by men protesting against custody decisions include the 'Spiderman' protest on a crane at Tower Bridge and Batman and Robin at the Royal Courts of Justice last year.
During 'Spiderman' David Chick's protest, traffic was prevented from crossing the bridge for five days.
This morning's protesters scaled gantries above the A40 eastbound at Shepherd's Bush, the A13 westbound near Prince Regents Lane and Canning Town Flyover, above the northbound entrance, southern approach, of the Blackwall Tunnel and the M4 elevated section, eastbound into London.
Traffic is flowing at all locations, but motorists may face delays.
Protesters tried to bring London commuter traffic to a standstill today after scaling gantries and unfurling giant banners over major roads. And the BBC Aggrieved dads stage bridge protestThe protest by campaign group Fathers For Justice caused major delays on four routes into the capital and forced police to close the northbound entrance of the Blackwall Tunnel. It was the first major nationwide action by the group, which is calling for fathers to be given more rights over child access and custody.
A spokesman for Fathers For Justice warned it was "small beer" and only the start of a campaign that would last into the summer. He said the group expected up to 100 fathers to go to prison for their cause.
Before Christmas a man dressed as Spiderman spent six days up a crane at Tower Bridge, causing severe disruption on surrounding roads.
Today four men dressed as cartoon superheroes - including Batman, Superman and Spiderman - scaled gantries above the A40 at Wood Lane, the M4 flyover, the A13 at Prince Regent's Lane and the entrance to Blackwall tunnel.Others are protesting on the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol and the Tyne bridge in Newcastle. Police kept traffic flowing on all routes but were forced to close the northbound Blackwall tunnel and put a contraflow in place through the southbound tunnel.
AA spokesman Rebecca Rees said: "The protesters have caused problems in terms of congestion - it is Monday morning so it could not have come at a worse time. The disruption is delays rather than chaos. A lot of people are stopping to look at the banners."
She said drivers already suffering congestion and M25 roadworks would not appreciate the action. "Hundreds of thousands of motorists are trying to get into London and there will be little sympathy with this."
But Matt O'Connor, of Fathers For Justice, said: "We believe we still have public support. The number of complaints in the past is tiny compared to messages of support.
"Providing fathers stick to non-violent action we are supportive. It comes as a result of the Government's failure to do anything about the forceful removal of children from their fathers by the courts. This is small beer. We are going to end up with a lot of fathers in prison - they are not going to see their children anyway, so what have they got to lose?"
Four members of pressure group Fathers-4-Justice staged an early morning protest on the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. The four men climbed on to a support at the Leigh Woods end of the bridge dressed as Batman, Robin, Superman and Spiderman.
At 0530 GMT on Monday they unveiled a protest banner reading: "Fathers-4-Justice, Fighting for the right to see your kids."
Spokesman Jeff Skinner said the men apologised for any inconvenience to commuters who were denied access to the bridge.
"We and thousands of other fathers in this country are denied access to our children every day by this country's archaic family laws," he said.
'Law courts'
It is not yet known yet how long the demonstration will last but at 0730 GMT on Monday the bridge was closed to traffic by police.
Last week another Fathers-4-justice member carried out a similar protest on Plymouth's Tamar bridge which lasted seven days.
It is thought that as many as 15 members of Fathers-4-Justice met in Bristol on Monday from the west Country, coming from Cheltenham, Swindon, Lyme Regis, Worcester, Gloucester and Bristol.
"As many as 50 members of the group plan to visit the site throughout the day to support their superheroes," said Mr Skinner.
One of the protesters, who gave his names as Jason, said: "We apologise or any inconvenience but we haven't seen our children for years.
"We've been fighting the law courts but getting absolutely nowhere."
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Because the safety of both the protesters and members of the public is a paramount concern, the bridge has been closed."
On Monday, Fathers-4-Justice issued a statement saying that today's protests were the start of a "full-scale national campaign of civil disruption".
